A 17-year-old Waverly High School student lost her life in a three-car collision near Newfield on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the Valley community in mourning.

The accident happened on West Danby Road near Piper Road in the Town of Newfield at around 12:50 p.m., according to the New York State Police.

According to preliminary investigations, a Jeep Patriot and a Toyota Yaris were both heading north of Danby Road. The Jeep Patriot was rear-ended by the Toyota Yaris while its driver was stopped for another car that was in front of it turning. The Cadillac CT6 then struck the Toyota Yaris as it entered oncoming traffic.

Peyton C. Shaw, a 17-year-old Waverly resident, was a passenger in the Toyota Yaris when she was declared dead at the scene. 18-year-old Dale “Ty” Beeman was flown by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre with serious injuries.

Beeman had just graduated from Waverly last spring.

The driver of the Cadillac CT6, 29-year-old Stephen M. Lucente of Spencer, and the driver of the Jeep Patriot, 40-year-old Aristopher D. Bo of Waverly, were examined on the spot by EMS but were not taken to nearby hospitals.
