Dale Wolfley, who played four seasons for the West Virginia University football team in the late 1980s and 1990, has passed away, according to a report from WVMetroNews. He was 56.
The Mountaineer stalwart forged a career around the gridiron, first playing for WVU and then coaching at Phoenix Junior College in Arizona from 2003-07 before returning to the Mountain State for a position as Director of Player Development on head coach Bill Stewart’s coaching staff.
Wolfley later moved on to a position with the WVU Varsity Club in 2010, and worked there until 2022 while also filling roles in various WVU broadcasts and interview shows. He left those positions to pursue opportunities outside the school, but still maintained his ties to WVU football.
One of those was the WolfMan’s Call podcast, which focused on West Virginia athletics.
Dale Wolfley was the youngest of three brothers who played Division I football. Middle brother Ron was a star fullback at WVU from 1981-84 and is a member of the school’s sports hall of fame, while oldest brother Craig attended Syracuse. Craig went on to an NFL career with Pittsburgh and Minnesota, while Ron played for Arizona, Cleveland and the St. Louis Rams before also getting into the broadcast industry.
