Elizabeth “Liz” Moynihan Obituary – Death: Former U.S. Senator Patrick Moynihan wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Moynihan is Dead

Elizabeth “Liz” Moynihan Obituary; On Tuesday, November 7th, Elizabeth B. Moynihan, 94, passed away at home. She was the wife of former U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-New York).

She was a strong, independent, considerate, and imaginative woman. In the political arena, she was known for being the clever campaign manager who helped her husband win the 1976 Senate election and hold onto it for the ensuing twenty-four years. Still, Moynihan lived in Washington for only a part of his life.

Born in Norwood, Massachusetts, on September 19, 1929, Elizabeth Therese Brennan grew up in the nearby town of Stoughton. She and her husband were from a lowly Irish household in which their fathers had been gone for the majority of their life. Mrs. Moynihan’s mother went to secretarial school and then worked as the head editor of a small newspaper.

After finishing high school, Mrs. Moynihan enrolled at Boston University, but she later withdrew due to a combination of her desire to move to New York and financial difficulties.

Drawn to the political arena, she took part in Democrat W. Averell Harriman’s victorious 1954 campaign for governor. She and Moynihan, who also contributed to the campaign, went with Harriman to Albany as gubernatorial aides, sharing an office. They were married in 1955.
