While a Thermos offers a great way to keep soups or hot beverages hot until lunchtime, a stinky Thermos may make you want to think twice before using it again. Whether the odor is from fragrant foods or a lunch left in it too long, a regular washing combined with some baking soda or a little vinegar can get it smelling fresh once again.

Air it Out

It’s all too easy to forget about that Thermos after consuming its contents. If it has been sitting with the lid on for a day or longer, that Thermos probably smells of whatever it previously contained. This is particularly bad if the food has spoiled.

To begin the cleaning process, remove the lid, swish some warm water around inside the Thermos, then dump the water out. Let the Thermos air out for several hours or until you’re ready to wash it. Sometimes, a quick rinse and fresh air are enough to deodorize the container.

Wash It

Washing the Thermos with warm, soapy water is sometimes enough to remove lingering odors. Put a small squirt of dish soap in the carafe, then fill 2/3 of the way with warm water. Replace the cap, swish the Thermos around a little, then dump the water out. Rinse, then sniff the Thermos again. If it still reeks or doesn’t look clean, sprinkle a little baking soda inside while the Thermos is still wet. Scrub the inside with a dish cloth wrapped around a bottle brush to help loosen debris. Rinse the inside of the Thermos, as well as the lid, but don’t soak the parts in water. Wipe the outside areas off with a dish cloth.

Vinegar Deodorizer

Vinegar offers an all-natural way to remove odors from Thermoses, travel mugs and water bottles that are difficult to clean. Pour an inch or two of white vinegar into a clean carafe, then fill most of the way with hot tap water. Place the lid on the Thermos, shake it up, then let it sit for 30 minutes or so. Empty the Thermos, then allow the vinegar to air dry. The remaining vinegar helps remove any lingering odors, and eventually evaporates without a trace. Rinse the Thermos if the smell is gone, or repeat the vinegar soak if not.

Preventive Maintenance

The best way to keep that Thermos odor-free is to always rinse or wash it immediately after use, or at very least, within several hours. The longer liquids sit in the Thermos, the greater the chance they’ll spoil and stink up the container, or even worse, get moldy.

When it comes to soups or other foods, its best to store those in a Thermos device designed specifically for food. These have wider openings than the traditional beverage-style Thermoses, and they’re also much easier to clean. A traditional Thermos has a narrow mouth, so it can be difficult to remove caked-on residues.

After washing any kind of Thermos, let all the parts air dry instead of placing the lid back on while the parts are wet. This helps eliminate any slight odor that may remain in the Thermos.

Method 1. Bleach and water

1.Fill the flask to almost the top with hot water.

2. Add a teaspoon of bleach.

3. Fasten on the lid and leave the mixture to stand for five minutes.

4. Rinse the vacuum flask out with hot water and leave upside down on a dish drainer to drain completely.

Method 2. Baking soda

3. Add 2 teaspoons of baking soda.

4. Leave to stand overnight.

1. Squeeze the juice out of a lemon.

2. Fill the thermos flask with boiling water. Pour the lemon juice in with it.

3.Let stand for half an hour or so.

1. Store vacuum flasks with the lids open a little. This will help the vacuum to stay dry. If there is any moisture left and the lid is on firmly, this can encourage the growth of mold and this causes some of the odor.

Be sure to check to see if you have something caught in the hose or the machine. Lay the hose out straight and shine a light through one end. If the light is blocked, you may have something in the hose. You may be able to push it thru with a dowel or coat hanger.

Check the intake opening on the bottom of the cleaner to see if there are any blockages there. Sometimes the cloth bags get old and smell. If they are washable great if not maybe it is time for a new vacuum. The hoses build up dirt inside. I can take my hose off the machine and lay it in the bath tub with soapy water and all kinds of dirt floats out. those two things usually take care of the problem.

Replace Air Filters

A clogged HVAC filter could be the cause of a persistent musty smell in the home. Many people are unsure how often to change air filters in their homes and put it off for too long, which can allow for a build-up of unwanted microscopic particles such as dust, mold spores, and bacteria. Air filters are available for purchase at most major retailers, and as a general rule, a house with more than one pet should change its filter every 20–45 days, or every 60 days for one pet. If the air filter is replaced and a musty smell persists, then it may be time to consider upping your filter’s MERV rating. A filter’s MERV rating indicates it’s effectiveness at trapping a range of airborne particles. Those with higher ratings will prove more apt at absorbing spores causing moldy odors.

Clean Coils

Coils are responsible for heat exchanges in the HVAC system and come into regular contact with the outside air circulating throughout, so it’s essential they are kept clean. HVACs have two main sets of coils: the interior, evaporator coil; and the exterior, condenser coil. However, it’s most likely that a dirty evaporator coil is the culprit. To alleviate smelly odors, as well as prevent a build-up of allergens, dust, grime, and spores in the HVAC’s coil system, be sure the coils are routinely cleaned.

Given the wide range in coil models, it’s best to let an A/C repair professional handle the maintenance so as not to run the risk of damaging the coils yourself.

Check For Excess Moisture

A common cause for a home’s mildewy smell is a clogged condensate drain line. As condensation forms on evaporator coils, the water drips into the condensate pan and down the drain line, taking with it the dirt that has fallen into the pan. Over time, neglected evaporator coils allow the excess moisture to create perfect conditions for mold growth in the condensate pan.

I know many of you are thrift store, yard-sale junkies like myself (high-five to that!) and you’re probably always bringing home random pieces of furniture that need some love and TLC. And let’s be honest–there’s a good chance that furniture probably has a funky smell. Well this post is your solution for that problem my friends! Today I have 5 ways to remove that musty smell from old furniture. You know what I’m talking about–the stale, funky nursing home smell that so often accompanies the most beautiful vintage furniture. It’s ain’t good. And no amount of hot, soapy water or time in the sun will even come close to removing it. I was actually talking to my mom about this the other day and she mentioned a few old-fashioned tricks that work really well to eliminate that musty smell. So today I’ve combined her tips with a few things that have worked for me in the past. These should help whether you’re dealing with something a little stinky or extra stinky. I’ve got you covered for all levels of stink! Let’s get to it, shall we?

Dryer Sheets

This is the easiest tip of the bunch and it works well if the smell you’re dealing with is about a four out of ten on the yuckiness scale. It’s not going to take the smell away, but it will certainly mask it. If you have an old dresser just line the drawers with dryer sheets or if it’s a vintage trunk just find a way to stash a few of them inside. This is a really great little trick for lots of yucky smells!

Baking Soda or Carpet Powder

Again, this one is for more mild to moderate smells. Grab some good old-fashioned baking soda, put it in a bowl and place it in the furniture. The bigger the piece the more baking soda you’ll need. For example, if you’re working on a dresser you’ll need a bowl in each drawer. Close it up and leave it for at least a week. Probably two if you’re dealing with a more serious smell. The baking soda will absorb it up like magic. You can also try using one of those odor eliminating carpet powders like this one. Use it in the exact same way as the baking soda.

Vinegar & Water Solution

This is an old-school trick that works well for those really, really funky smells. White vinegar will work the best, but if you don’t have that on hand you can try apple cider vinegar as well. Just mix water and vinegar together using a 1:1 ratio and thoroughly wipe down your piece of furniture, then allow it to air dry. Or you can also fill a spray bottle with the solution and spray it down, whichever your little heart desires. This stuff definitely works. Vinegar is a great natural cleaner and will do the trick just fine!

Murphy’s Oil Soap

Have you guys heard of Murphy Oil Soap Wood Cleaner? This stuff is the bomb and works wonders for actually cleaning wood and removing funky smells. And it’s so easy to use–just pour some on a clean cloth and wipe the piece down really well. Easy peasy for the win and it’s really effective.

Paint with a Powerful Primer

This is the one that works best for those really strong odors that just don’t want to go away. When I bought this old dresser from Salvation Army last year it had that classic musty smell. The whole thing smelled awful actually. I painted it using this KILZ Multi-Surface Primer and I was seriously ammmmmazed at how well that primer blocked the smell. It’s like it sealed it all in and gave me a fresh canvas to start from. If you’re willing to paint the piece of furniture, even if it’s just the inside, I’d definitely consider giving primer a try. This works really well if your furniture has a serious smell problem going on. It sure worked wonders for me!

Turn on the HVAC system, overhead fan, or any other appliance to eliminate the moisture from the air and carpet. After blotting the area with the carpet shampoo, allow it to dry, and then vacuum up the debris again.
8. Repeat the process. If you are lucky enough to remove the odor on the first try, the problem is solved. But other situations will need a little more persistence. Feel free to continue repeating the process using the vinegar and baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, or carpet shampoo methods above.

Try putting some baking soda in your drawers for a few days. You can vacuum it out later.

I agree with Jeannie that baking soda should help. Also, if you live in a sunny area, you can open everything up – take out any drawers and put them in the sun for the day. That often helps. Wishing you the best.

Placing several bbq charcoal briquettes in bowls or paper or cloth bags and leaving them in the drawers for several days will help absorb odors. Just be sure to use plain charcoal NOT he type that has starter fluid added. This method worked well for me in an old musty-smelling basement.

No matter how much you try to ignore it, a musty carpet filled with mildew can be hard to ignore. But this isn’t only a distraction, it’s a safety hazard for you and everyone on the property that can trigger significant health issues. Prolonging the cleaning process will also result in the spread of damage, possibly even causing the carpet to become irreplaceable.

On the bright side, getting a musty smell out of a carpet is relatively simple. Especially if the area was flooded, getting rid of the odor should be a walk in the park. Here are some tips on how to get mildew and musty smells from the carpet.

1. Dry the area

Musty, earthy, or dank smells – whatever you want to call it – are the result of excess moisture. So the area was definitely wet before the smell started. If there is lingering water damage in the area, dry out the area as best you can or call a professional water damage mitigation company. But keep in mind they may inform you that the carpet will need to be replaced if the carpet was heavily flooded.

2. Vacuum out the area

As soon as the carpet is completely dry, remove the remaining debris by vacuuming the area. A larger vacuum should be able to pick up more dust.

3. Apply vinegar water mixture to the carpet

To remove mildew and musty smells, apply a mixture of vinegar and water to the affected area of the carpet.

Vinegar is a great home remedy for absorbing stubborn odors. Depending on the amount of mildew on the carpet, mix one cup of white vinegar for every two cups of water. If you still have mildew and the musty smell on your carpet, try using a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. For every part of hydrogen peroxide used, use five parts of water. This is also a great remedy to remove the mold spores and eliminate the musty odor.

7. Using foam carpet shampoo as an alternative

The cool thing about removing mold, mildew, and musty odors is that there are many solutions that can be applied. If both the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide fail to do the job, pick up a bottle of foam carpet shampoo from the store.

Add a good amount of the shampoo to the affected area, rubbing it in with a sponge. Then let the shampoo soak in for at least 20 minutes – you do want it to dry. Afterwards, vacuum the shampoo and the remaining debris.

Do not rush this chore, as rushing it will cause the odor to spread throughout the house. Instead, lightly sweep the hairs, leftover pellets, and anything your dog has brought in from outside towards the trash can. Pick it up with a dustpan and immediately discard of it. Then, start mopping to clean anything up that may have stained the floor.

Before You Begin

Musty towel smell is the same issue that happens with unsanitary mop heads that are not left to dry properly or cleaning sponges that fail to dry out between uses. A warm, moist environment is most conducive to germs. When a towel gets a sour, musty smell, it is a sign that a bacteria colony is breeding and growing. Most often, a bunched up, damp towel in a warm room is all it takes for a colony to start.

Hanging a towel to allow air to circulate and dry it after use is definitely the best way to prevent odors. If you have a family, particularly with younger children, it may not be likely that every towel gets hung up properly.

One way to get compliance with towel hanging is to assign each person in the house their own color-coded towels. You can figure out who is causing the towel infraction by noticing the color of the towel wadded up on the floor. Work with the person to develop the habit of hanging their towels after each use and come up with creative towel-hanging ideas, too.

It is also important to remember to switch towels quickly from the washing machine to the dryer and clean your lint filter regularly to make sure that your dryer is running as efficiently as possible. If you notice that it takes a long time to dry towels, you may have a problem with your washing machine leaving too much water in them or with your dryer.

Also, just like dishwashers and other regularly used housekeeping appliances, your washing machine needs a good cleaning every now and then. Fortunately, washing the washer is pretty easy, as the appliance does most of the work for you. If you regularly wash your whites with chlorine bleach, then that is sufficient for cleaning your washing machine. But, if you forego the use of bleach, then periodically do a wash cycle with four cups of white vinegar on hot for the longest wash cycle.

Sometimes even when you are trying to prevent odors, your towels can still end up smelling a little off. If this occurs, you can try just one of these tips, or to really get the most bang for your buck, try them all back-to-back.

Machine Wash With Vinegar

Run your towels through a regular cycle with very warm or hot water, your regular detergent, and a cup of vinegar as a natural fabric softener for the rinse cycle.

Machine Wash With Baking Soda

Run the towels through the regular cycle again, this time using only a half cup of baking soda and no detergent or fabric softener. Just the baking soda will do the trick.

Dry Your Towels

Once you have done the vinegar and baking soda treatment, you need to dry your towels. Many swear by the fact that line-dried items smell fresher, though they often do not feel as soft. One way to have the best of both worlds is to do both. Hang the towels outside. When they are dry, toss them in the dryer with one or two new or very clean tennis balls or felted wool dryer balls. The sound of the tennis balls in the dryer may drive you crazy, but it will also fluff up the towels and make them softer. If line drying is not an option, you can dry in your dryer with the tennis balls, but skip the dryer sheets.

A vacuum cleaner can keep your home smelling fresh all the day, but you also have to return the favor by regularly maintaining it. As you might already know, vacuum cleaners tend to get smelly with time. Especially with bagged units, the odors can become pretty disturbing. If you fail to frequently maintain your vacuum cleaner, it will start releasing these foul odors instead of performing its duty of keeping the room surroundings fresh and clean. I bet you’re here because you reached this “milestone” (of you owning an “infected” unit), so read on. I have outlined an extensive step by step guide which will help you to get rid of these unwanted smells.

The guide

Step 1: Replace the bags/empty the debris

Smelly bags are usually the main cause of a smelling vacuum. If you own a bagged unit, start by replacing the bag. Bags are actually very important in preventing funny odors. Try to buy only original bags, produced or recommended by the manufacturer of the vacuum cleaner. Some bags have additional filtration layers which limit the smell released by the dirt gathered inside, not to mention complex auto-seal systems. Buy these type of bags instead of the simple paper ones. Bags should be replaced anywhere between 1 month to 6 months, depending on their size and on the frequency of your vacuuming. If you have washable bags, wash and allow them to dry completely (don’t mount back wet bags, or you might end up ruining the unit).

If you own a bagless unit, it is obvious you’ll need to empty the dirt bin, wash it and allow it to dry completely.

Step 2: Clean the vacuum cleaner

Ensuring that the vacuum is clean is the second step you should take. Do this start by dampening a cleaning cloth in fresh soapy water. Wipe the entire surface of the vacuum thoroughly, to remove dust and other type of stains. If you want to be more environmental friendly, clean the vacuum using baking soda. Start by preparing the mixture; i.e. sprinkle 1 teaspoon of baking soda into a reasonable amount of water (0.1 gallons).

Use this solution to wash your vacuum cleaners hose, filters and its bag compartment. Rinse these parts using fresh water and then dry any plastic or metallic material using a clean and dry piece of cloth. Pay special attention to the inside of the hose. Remove any clogs which you might notice.

Step 3: Clean/Replace the filters

Your machine has filters which aid in keeping off dirt, dust and allergens from escaping back into the vacuumed environment. These filters usually get old and it may come a time when they need to be changed. Here’s a piece of advice I always give to my clients: don’t get cheappy on filters. Filters are important, not only for your health, but for the health of your loved ones.

You need to change your vacuum’s filters every 3 to 12 months. As in the case of the bags, always buy recommended/original parts. 3rd party products not only have an inferior quality, but I’ve seen cases where they don’t even completely match the needed geometrical shape, allowing dust and other airborne particles to completely evade the filtration system.

If you have washable filters, wash them and leave them to air-dry for 24h, before finally reassembling them into your machine. Even washable filter wear out in time, so don’t be “afraid” to purchase new ones if necessary.

Step 4: Incorporate perfume pads

If you haven’t thought about incorporating perfume pads in your vacuum cleaner when vacuuming, then it’s time you do. Scented tablets are important, especially since you are trying to get rid of bad smells. Personally, I like the lavender or the fresh b lue ocean fragrances, I think they fit the vacuuming activity. However, there are many other types to choose from. Just be sure to ask all your family members which one they prefer, so you won’t end up irritating someone. Some last longer than others, but the effect is the same.

Purchase perfume pads which are scented with your preferred odor and place them on the top filter of your vacuum. After doing this, turn on your machine. Once it’s on, it will release a gentle and fresh scent as the air passes through the pads.

Step 5: Use Cinnamon

You might not know this, but cinnamon absorbs bad smells. The undeniable strong scent of cinnamon has the ability to deal with the foul smell of dust particles that your machine picks up during cleaning. If you don’t want to use perfume pads (although you can use both, of course), all you have to do is sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon into your vacuum bag or into the canister and that’s it.

If you don’t like the smell of cinnamon, you can try out other ingredients like dried orange rinds or coffee beans, or any other sweet scented spices.

Method 3 of 6: Anhydrous calcium chloride

If your mold odors have originated from stagnant water caused by something like a leaking window seal or convertible top, the use of anhydrous calcium chloride may be your solution. This substance is highly effective in removing the moisture that causes the odor, holding up to double its weight in water. Often, anhydrous calcium chloride comes in a kit that includes a perforated lid to hold the chemical and a receptacle to catch excess water.

Materials Needed

• Anhydrous calcium chloride
• Enamel pot the perforated plastic lid can rest on, if needed
• Perforated plastic or waxed cardboard lid, if needed

Step 1: Place product onto lid. Put a few tablespoons or the amount indicated on your product’s instructions into the perforated plastic lid.

Materials Needed

• Baking soda
• Shop vac or handheld vacuum

Step 1: Sprinkle baking soda. Thoroughly sprinkle baking soda (enough for an opaque white appearance) on the affected area. Let sit for at least two hours.

So, no matter how clean your toilet bowl or lid may be, your bathroom will still be stinky nevertheless. The main reason why stale urine stinks so bad is because of odor causing bacteria that feed on it. Here are some easy ways to remove bathroom odors caused by stale urine:

• Bio-enzymatic cleaners. These remove the bacteria from the drains.
• Vinegar and baking soda. Both these substances have the ability to cut through the odor and even absorb them. Dilute a little vinegar in a quart of water and add a cup of baking soda to the mixture. Sprinkle it all around the toilet. Leave it on for 10 minutes then wipe clean with a cloth or mop. Repeat this remedy every two-three days to prevent bathroom odors.
• Hydrogen peroxide. Many products containing hydrogen peroxide are very effective in cleaning bathroom surfaces and removing stale urine odors. Wipe down all counter tops, sink, toilet bowl and lid with hydrogen peroxide. Repeat this treatment weekly.

2. Ways to remove musty odors from a closed house

To get rid of musty odors in a closed home, place some charcoal briquette in a shallow pan in each room for a few days. This will absorb all the odors. Also leave the windows open if it is warm. You can also mask the odors with commercial deodorizers like Febreeze.

3. Ways to deodorize clothes

Unused clothes can stink of mothballs. To remove these odors, hang them outside for a few hours. You can also toss the clothes in a dryer with some fabric softener sheets so they smell as good as new. If possible, launder the clothes.

4. Ways to remove odors from musty suitcases

This one is easy. Simply add some old newspapers to the suitcase and leave them in for a few days. The newspaper will absorb all odors.

5. Ways to remove refrigerator odors

Refrigerator odors can make your entire kitchen smell bad. Here are some natural ways to remove fridge odors:

• Throw away spoilt food.
• Remove all the trays including the ice trays in the freezer. Wash them under running hot water and mild bleach or detergent. Rinse them clean.
• Wipe down the inside of the empty fridge with a sanitizing solution. I recommend adding 1 tbsp chlorine bleach per gallon of water for this job.
• You can even wipe using equal parts of vinegar and water.
• Leave the door open for an hour.
• Place an open box of fresh baking soda to absorb remaining odors. Replace with a new box every 2 months.
• You can also stuff some old newspaper rolls in the fridge to absorb odors.
• Fresh coffee grounds placed in an open container on different shelves of the fridge are also an effective natural remedy to remove stale fridge odors.
• Another easy remedy to remove or mask odors in the fridge is to place a cotton ball soaked in vanilla extract. Place these around the refrigerator and keep the door closed for 24 hours. All odors will have disappeared the next day.

6. Ways to remove carpet odors

Here are the steps to clean carpets and remove pet urine and other musty odors from it:

• Sprinkle carpet shampoo all over the carpet. Steam clean after a few minutes. Also clean the curtains and upholstery in this manner.
• Liberally sprinkle baking soda all over the carpet. Vacuum after an hour. All the odors will be absorbed by the soda.
• Use deodorizing and stain removing products made especially for carpets available in the market.
• Apart from the carpet, also treat the upholstery, linen, bed sheets, curtains etc.

7. Clean the ducts

If possible, clean the air vents and ducts of heating/ventilating/air-conditioning units. You can use a brush and soapy water to do so. If needed, and in case of very strong odors, hire professionals for this job.

8. To get rid of kitchen odors

Baking soda, bleach, vinegar, lemon solution or hydrogen peroxide are some of the best ways to deodorize the kitchen. Wipe down all surfaces with your chosen cleaner. Throw away spoilt food. Clean the refrigerator as stated above. Wash dirty plates immediately. If the weather is warm and your kitchen has a window, leave it open to allow fresh air to come in. This will dissipate most odors especially smoke.

9. Mask the odors

If the above remedies do not work, you can always mask the odors with Febreeze- a popular deodorizer which contains cyclodextrin a sugary substance that absorbs odors. You can also diffuse essential oils like Lavender, Rosemary or Frankincense to make the rooms smell fresh. In absence of diffusers, use cotton balls soaked in essential oils placed around the bedrooms and living rooms to mask odors.

10. Some more tips to get rid of odors

Odors in the closet can occur due to dirty laundry, smelly shoes etc. Place baking soda inside shoes for 24 hours so the odor is absorbed completely. Shake off the soda the next day before using. Repeat this easy remedy every now and then to remove stinky odor from shoes. Also launder and wash clothes to make them smell fresh.

When moving into a new rental apartment, you may find that your new living quarters have an unpleasant musty smell. When renting, you are limited in your options. A fresh coat of paint may help reduce the odor, but of course you would need permission from your landlord in many cases to do so. There are a few other things you can do that will safely get rid of the musty smell without the risk of breaking any terms of your lease.

Step 1

Sprinkle all fabric surfaces and carpeting with a coating of baking soda. The baking soda is a natural deodorizing agent that gets rid of the musty smell plus removes any excess moisture that may be the cause of the smell. Let the baking soda sit overnight, then vacuum the fabrics to collect the soda.

Step 2

Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and use this as an odor neutralizing spray. Unlike air fresheners that simply mask the smell, the vinegar actually captures and dissipates the musty smell. Use as needed by spraying through the air and over fabrics.

Step 3

Steam clean your carpeting. Rent or purchase a steam cleaner and use steam cleaning solution as instructed on your particular cleaning unit. Run the steam cleaner over your carpet carefully just as you would a vacuum, and remember to pull the steam trigger constantly to keep steam flowing out of the unit.

Step 4

Place bowls of baking soda or vinegar around the home. This will naturally absorb odor in the apartment and will greatly reduce the musty smell.
