His first significant job was covering the football competition at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany.

With his distinctive voice and in-depth understanding of the sport, Motson soon made a name for himself as one of the best football commentators in the nation. He was renowned for wearing a sheepskin coat that served as his signature during cold-weather contests.

Motson declared in 2008 that he would stop providing full-time analysis at the conclusion of the 2007–2008 football season. He kept up his part-time commentary and punditry, and he also penned a piece for the Daily Telegraph.
