There was never a shortage of amazing baseball tales from Paul Snyder. A particular fond memory of his was of him sitting in his car suspiciously next to a field at the Tigers’ Spring Training complex in 1990.
Snyder was attempting to find out more about a young high school shortstop called Chipper Jones, on the recommendation of one of his best scouts, Hep Cronin. Snyder made the decision to eavesdrop on a private workout the Tigers were holding in Lakeland, Florida, before traveling to Jacksonville to watch the future Hall of Famer play at The Bolles School.
Snyder remarked, “They say if you can’t see, you can scout if you can hear.” “We waited for the wood bat to ring while we sat in the car.”
Snyder had seen a teenage catcher named Javy Lopez in Puerto Rico around this same time. He concealed behind the stands so that neither the Yankees nor any other club would know he was there. The view was good. But a newly purchased shirt for him by his beloved wife Petie was torn by a nail that stuck out of one of the wooden benches
These were only a few of the priceless tales that one of the most cherished and significant characters in Braves history had to share. After several former Atlanta players and officials discovered on Thursday night that Snyder had gone away at the age of 88, Snyder’s impact on the club was once again acknowledged on Friday.
