Martinez spent the majority of his first three seasons at the club playing for the minor teams before making his Real Zaragoza B debut in 1991.
He made his La Liga debut for the first time on June 20, 1993, in a 2-2 tie with Madrid.
He entered the five-year-old eld as a substitute for Luis Cuartero in the 55th minute of the game. When Wigan finished as Division Three Champions the following season, in 1996–97, Martnez received his first awards.
