Sebastian Neil Biography

Sebastian Neil is an investigative journalist. He serves as a correspondent and Middle-East bureau chief for VICE News Tonight on HBO. He has previously served at Al jazeera and Fault Lines as a presenter. He played a key role in uncovering and documenting the United Nations’ role in the 2010–13 Haiti cholera outbreak, the largest in recent history.

Neil worked for Al Jazeera English in the United States from 2008 to 2016. Initially based in Al Jazeera English’s main US bureau in Washington, D.C., he later moved to Al Jazeera America’s Fault Lines show hub in San Francisco. He reported from across the continent as a presenter on Fault Lines, the channel’s flagship news magazine about the Americas.

For his work in Haiti, he received a DuPont-Columbia University Award in Broadcast Journalism. He continued to cover Haiti for Fault Lines, which won a News & Documentary Emmy Award for “Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a News Magazine” on September 30, 2014, for the episode “Haiti In A Time Of Cholera,” which also won a Peabody Award.

Neil has also covered the Occupy movement in the United States, as well as the shooting of Michael Brown near St. Louis, Missouri, which sparked widespread protests. He previously worked in the Middle East before relocating to the Americas. He worked at the channel’s main broadcast center in Doha, Qatar, where he assisted in the channel’s launch.
