  • The Killer is the newest globetrotting thriller from Netflix, with filming locations including Paris, the Dominican Republic, New Orleans and Chicago.
  • Fans can visit The Waterfront location but it’s not a restaurant in real life, instead it’s a ballroom used to host weddings.
  • The film also shares key filming spots with Emily in Paris, inspiring an unexpected crossover.

The filming locations featured in a movie or TV show can often make or break the final product, especially when it comes to an international thriller such as the newest arrival on Netflix, The Killer. Starring Michael Fassbender, the film makes use of locales around the world as it follows its nameless assassin on a deadly worldwide hunt.

The Killer’s filming locations explored

The Killer was filmed in four key locations around the world in the form of Paris in France, the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean as well as New Orleans and Chicago within the United States.

In Paris, the titular killer takes up refuge in an under-renovation apartment building overlooking the Panthéon and the Place de l’Estrapade in the city’s Latin Quarter according to Atlas of Wonders. Elsewhere in the French capital, the film also makes use of Charles de Gaulle Airport as well as a pedestrian bridge near La Villette Park called Passerelle des Ardennes.

Following The Killer’s Parisian exploits, the film jets off to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean where filming took place at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo as well as the smaller La Isabela International Airport and Santo Domingo’s old town area known as Ciudad Colonial.

Back in the United States, the film makes use of several locations in and around New Orleans in Louisiana, most notably the downtown and Belle Chase areas as well as the Lower Algiers to Chalmette Ferry and the historic West Pearl Bridge on US Route 90.

And finally, Chicago also features as a filming location despite the fact that the Windy City doubles for New York. Except for an establishing shot of Grand Central Station, scenes were filmed in Hyde Park–Kenwood National Bank Building and Midtown Athletic Club, which doubled as Sayonara Bank and the Baliquinox Club respectively.

The Killer’s Waterfront is not a real restaurant

One key location within The Killer that has drawn particularly notable attention is The Waterfront, a restaurant where Fassbender’s assassin meets with The Expert played by Tilda Swinton.

Despite being a lavish restaurant in The Killer, The Waterfront is actually a ballroom used to host weddings at Hotel Baker, located at 100 West Main Street in St Charles to the west of Chicago.

Built in 1928, Hotel Baker is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers 53 rooms and suites, multiple meeting and banquet rooms, the aforementioned ballroom as well as rose gardens that feature in the film.

The Waterfront gets its name as it sits on the Fox River that runs through St Charles and much of Illinois.

An unexpected Emily in Paris crossover

The Parisian filming locations used in The Killer offer up a surprising crossover between the intense thriller and the most juxtaposed of Netflix series, the bright and bubbly Emily in Paris.

During the opening scenes, as Fassbender’s assassin blends in with his Paris surroundings, we can see him walking past an Italian restaurant called Terra Nera which fans of Emily in Paris will be very familiar with as it’s the same location that serves as Gabriele’s restaurant.

Not only that, but the restaurant that The Killer overlooks from his apartment window uses the same building as Emily’s Paris apartment.

Who’s hoping for a Michael Fassbender cameo in season 4 of Emily in Paris?
