The Lady In The Van review: Never mind your manners | London Evening Standard

Daniel Johnson

Updated on March 25, 2026

To accompany this splendour, there’s yet another Lady in the Van book out, the “complete edition” this time, (Profile/Faber, £14.99), with a foreword by Hytner, a new diary by Bennett (now 81) about the making of the film, a reprint of the original memoir and the new film script, again by Bennett, this time adapting his stage play rather than the memoir, all illustrated not only with colourful, iconic stills from the film and its making but also endearing monochrome sketches of its production by another of the celebrated resident of Gloucester Crescent, one who knew the original noxious baggage no doubt, the artist David Gentleman, 85.
