Tying a white ribbon on outside door

Like the others, my first thought was that the white ribbon is a way of helping your friend identify her house. I know a lady who does something similar by having a bright green ornamental frog on her doorstep - she lives in a row of terraced houses which look quite similar so the frog is her point of reference.
