The well-known anime streaming platform ‘Aniwatch’ has been taken offline, but what happened to the website and will it return?
For thousands of anime fans around the world, today is a sad day as they mourn the loss of another streaming website, Aniwatch.
The popular streaming website has been officially taken offline, but what happened to the website and could it ever return?
What happened to Aniwatch?
- Last night, Aniwatch was officially taken offline, with the website posting a message stating that the site had “reached its limits” and “can no longer provide this service.”
On February 28th, the first messages from disheartened fans started to circulate on social media.
The fan-favourite streaming website was officially taken offline, with a lengthy message posted on the homepage by the Aniwatch team.
According to the statement, Aniwatch had been struggling to keep up with global demand for the site, reporting that “money problems and a few small server outages” were to blame.
“We got a lot of suggestions saying that we should add ads. People said that they would rather have Aniwatch with ads than no Aniwatch at all. While this certainly is a great point, it is something we won’t resort to. We did not create Aniwatch to fill the greed of privacy intruding companies.” – Aniwatch statement.
Will Aniwatch return?
Whilst nothing has yet been confirmed, there is a chance that Aniwatch could return in the future.
Per the statement, “Aniwatch’s closure is not a definite decision”, which suggests that there is a possibility that the platform could return down the line.
However, the staff “needs some time to figure things out” i.e., how to fund such a platform.
Concerns over fake websites…
Following the news that Aniwatch had been taken offline, there were immediate concerns from fans on social media about fake or phishing websites attempting to use the ‘Aniwatch brand’ to entice fans.
Aniwatch ended their official statement with an important notice for people looking for the site in future.
“Aniwatch.me is our one and only domain. Don’t be fooled by websites or apps pretending to be us. You will find every information about our current situation right here on Aniwatch.me and NOWHERE ELSE.” – Aniwatch statement.
This article will be updated as soon as more information on the story emerges.
