He won the National Film Award for Best Art Direction four times and the Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction three times.

On 2 August 2023, Nitin Desai passed away due to suicide. He passed away at the age of 57. He committed suicide at his studio located in Karjat, 80 km away from Mumbai.

He went to his room at 10 pm last night. Nitin didn’t come out for a long time this morning. Then his bodyguard and other people knocked on the door but no one opened the door. 

His dead body was found hanging from the ceiling fan. After which the police have been informed, the police removed the body and sent it for post-mortem.
