Netflix’s newest arrival, Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother, is centered on the exploits of a deadly assassin as she moves heaven and earth to rescue the daughter she was forced to give up years earlier in the hopes of keeping her safe.

While the relationship between The Mother and Zoe is at the heart of the film, there is an ongoing mystery about who the girl’s father is as The Mother had two romantic partners before falling pregnant, arms dealer Hector Álvarez and ex-SAS soldier, Adrian Lovell.

The mystery of Zoe’s father in The Mother

Zoe is the daughter of the titular Mother in the Netflix thriller and she finds herself at the heart of the movie’s tense and explosive plot throughout.

Question marks about her parentage persist from the very beginning of the film as The Mother was romantically involved with two partners before getting pregnant, ex-SAS marine, Adrian Lovell, and an arms dealer named Hector Álvarez.

After learning that the pair were involved in child trafficking, The Mother turned on them and became an informant for the FBI, forcing her to give up her daughter and live in solitude in Alaska for the next 12 years in the hopes of keeping Zoe safe.

That is until FBI Special Agent Cruise, who worked with The Mother years earlier, contacts her to inform her that Zoe has been kidnapped by Hector Álvarez as a means of luring the infamous assassin out of hiding.

Who is Zoe’s father in The Mother?

Adrian Lovell is revealed to be Zoe’s father in The Mother’s final act.

While rescuing Zoe from Hector Álvarez in Cuba, the arms dealer confronts The Mother and asks if he is the father of the young girl.

Jennifer Lopez’s character brushes him off before shooting him dead, cooly saying: “Does it matter?”

Once The Mother gets Zoe to safety, she takes her back to her Alaskan cabin where she teaches her several survival lessons should they be tracked down.

Lo-and-behold, Adrian Lovell succeeds in finding the pair, bringing with him a sizeable group of henchmen in the hopes of killing The Mother and recapturing Zoe.

During the final confrontation, after The Mother and Zoe have teamed up to kill all of Lovell’s men, he calls out to her on the radio, saying: “Our girl’s got potential. She’s so like you. Meet me two clicks to the left of your position, or I destroy that potential right now.”

The snide comment, which comes as he points a sniper at Zoe, seemingly confirms that he is the girl’s real father in The Mother.

Who plays Zoe in The Mother?

Taking on the role of Zoe in The Mother is up-and-coming actress Lucy Paez.

The rising star was born on September 20, 2008, which makes Lucy Paez just 14 years of age as of The Mother’s release in May 2023.

While she may now live in the United States, Lucy was actually born in the city of San Pedro Garza Garcia, in the state of Nuevo León in Mexico.

Incredibly, Lucy’s role in The Mother is actually just her fourth professional acting credit.

Lucy’s first appearance came back in 2018 when she starred in the film Silencio alongside Lord Of The Rings veteran John Noble, Sherlock’s Rupert Graves and Melina Matthews.

Since then, Lucy has appeared in the movies Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar and The Exorcism Of Carmen Farias, both of which were released in 2021.

The Mother is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on Friday, May 12, 2023.
